ISIS Joins with ‘Moderate’ Hamas for Terror in Sinai

PJ Media, by Patrick Poole, June 19, 2016: Earlier this month I reported here at PJ Media on growing incidents of terrorism by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. I noted the arrest of an IED terror cell composed of Muslim Brotherhood members in Alexandria who had been attacking government and military targets since January. Now, Egypt […]

West arming Libya? What Libya?

The West is going to arm the UN-backed government of Libya, which is fighting ISIS and others there. Sounds good, but this AP story notes that it is “fraught with risk,” without telling you what those risks are, besides the “risk” of another wave of immigrants into Europe. So here are the real risks: Everyone’s […]

In an exclusive interview with JerusalemOnline, Egyptian peace activist and political analyst Ahmed Meligy stressed that Egypt, France, Israel and the entire world is part of the same global struggle against ISIS. He sees parallels in the various terror attacks the murderous terror organization has implemented across the globe: “ISIS’s main power of influence is focusing on parallel coordinated terror attacks in the same hour in three different cities in three different continents. They blew up a mosque while Muslims were praying in Kuwait, attacked an energy factory in France and killed 38 tourists in Tunisia on July 3.” Additionally, the murderous terror attacks in Beirut and Paris occurred back to back and not too long prior to that, a Russian airplane was downed by ISIS in the Sinai.
While some individuals in Islamist circles have celebrated the murderous Paris terror attacks, Meligy emphasized that Egyptians mourned with the French people: “You see disturbing videos of some so-called Muslims celebrating the tragedy in Paris from many places in the world except from Egypt. I dare anyone to show me a video of an Egyptian feeling happy about it. Egyptians are not violent by nature and we suffer from ISIS too with over 1,000 Egyptian causalities by ISIS in less than two years.”

Meligy is very concerned about France’s future following warnings from security officials expressing that ISIS is planning more terror attacks within the country: “France is correct regarding expecting more terror attacks from ISIS in the future, which scares me because the French government will have to take desperate measures and be very hard on the Muslims in France. I can’t blame them but when a Muslim is treated guilty by association, it can create hatred and a loss of compassion for France, which can result in joining ISIS.”

However, even though the entire free world is at war with ISIS, Meligy is highly critical of how the US is leading this struggle: “To be honest, I don’t know how the US leading a coalition of 60 countries with military and intelligence capabilities cannot even stop or weaken ISIS. It is a big failure by the West. Their help to Egypt or any other country won’t be significant. I strongly believe that Egypt must strengthen its alliance with Israel because Israel is a country that has suffered the most from terrorism in the world and they have experience dealing with radical groups. Now both countries need each other more than ever to unite against ISIS in the Sinai.”

Unfortunately, Meligy believes that it is too late for the West to make any meaningful changes in the Middle East due to the fact that they rely solely on airstrikes while ISIS is constantly on the move, never had a permanent base of operations, and their assets have mainly been cash and weapons: “The Americans should have intervened four years ago in Syria like they did in Libya without hesitation but of course Libya was the priority because they had oil and now Libya is in chaos just like in Iraq so it is no wonder that ISIS is growing in these countries like cancer.”

If the West seeks to improve the situation in the Middle East at this stage, Meligy indicated that they need to adopt Nathan Sharansky’s vision outlined in the Case for Democracy according to which democratization should be promoted worldwide as the best means to promote global security. In response to skeptics who believe that democracy cannot take hold in the Arab world, Sharansky argued that in the past, people did not think many European countries would ever become democracies and they are now thriving democracies today:
